Mrs. Russell is confident in her ability to continue the tradition of excellence at Tatum. Committee Reports Book Fair (Linda Harrison) Linda wasn’t able to attend and, in her absence, Nickie reported the total sales and profits from both Book Fairs: Sales Total ~$24,000 Profit Total ~$10,000 Totals are not finalized since we are still waiting for all checks to clear. Business Partners (Kim Brown) Stardust Skate Night netted $280 Kim provided an overview of the value Business Partners provide to Tatum. This year our Business Partners donated $10,476 in cash donations and over $53,000 in-kind donations. That’s over $63,000 in donations that directly benefit Tatum Ridge students. We encourage everyone to patronize the Business Partners whenever they can. Family Fun (Carolyn Braune) Tatum Ridge Rays Day is coming up on May 30th. Tickets are available for $12 (upper deck) and $20 (lower level outfield). Tatum Ridge will receive $4 per ticket. Order forms have been sent home and are also available at the front desk. All requests must be turned in by Friday, May 14th. A Family Fun Golf Night is in the works. Plans are being firmed up for Thursday, May 27th from 6:00 – 8:00 PM behind the school. Look for more information coming home with students soon. Ideas for more Family Fun events next year were discussed. A second Family Dinner night is under discussion and majority seemed to agree that a movie night would be another good option. Jog-A-Thon (Susan Snyder) Susan reported that Keva Juice sales covered the cost of Jog-A-Thon t-shirts. Approximately $13,000 was made The PTO and staff thanked Susan and Kim for a successful and fun Jog-A-Thon PALS (Sharon Moloney and Michelle Christianson) Sharon informed us that there will be feedback surveys available at the sign-in desk. They encourage everyone to fill out one so they can improve the Volunteer experience at Tatum. Sharon shared a new form with everyone that will be used to nominate Volunteer of the Year recipients. Nominations can be made in the following categories: Youth Volunteer, Adult Volunteer, Senior Volunteer, Business Partner of the Year, and Innovative Project of the Year. PTO members and staff are encouraged to provide feedback on the form itself and submit nominees. All nomination forms should be turned in to the front desk by August 31, 2010. PTO 2010-2011 Budget (Nickie Wolf) Nickie reviewed the 2010-2011 PTO Budget. Total income from fundraising events is budgeted at $81,200, expenses for those events is set at $39,200, and PTO expense accounts spending is $39,600. This leaves only a $2,900 buffer. Nickie reassured all that there was still reserve funds and we will be able to make adjustments and provide funds as we have in the past There was some initial concern that there wouldn’t be enough money to fund startup of Fall projects, but Nickie provided evidence that these funds would be in place at the beginning of the school year. Nickie and Ann pointed out that the 2010-2011 budgets provide the same Curriculum Enhancement funds as this year. The 2010-2011 PTO Budget was approved.
Old Business PTO Marquee (Kim Brown) Kim met with the sign company and county facilities manager last week. She was hoping the county would be able to install the marquee, but that will not be possible (they will assist with permitting). Kim requested an additional $300 from PTO to cover the cost of installation. A motion was made, seconded and approved to provide up to $300 for installation of the PTO Marquee. The marquee will be installed before next school year. Thank Yous (Jane Beattie) Jane shared ‘Thank You’ notes from various Tatum classes for the new playground equipment. Jane shared a ‘Thank You’ letter from Cyesis for the books we gave them from our Book Drive. Cyesis sent pictures of a “Thank You Tatum Ridge” message that they posted on their marquee along Beneva Rd. New Business Ballroom Dancing (Coach Styers) Coach Styers reminded the PTO of the importance of including ballroom dancing in the PE curriculum. The lessons have been given for the last two years to 3rd-5th graders. She is looking into possible dancing exercises for K-2nd. The 3rd-5th program costs $1000 Coach Styers is asking Dance USA for a donation to cover the cost, but has not received a response yet. The PTO has already budgeted $600 for ballroom dancing in the 2010-2011 school year. In case Dance USA cannot contribute, she is asking for an additional $400 to cover the total cost. This is a maximum amount. A motion was made, seconded and approved to provide up to an additional $400 if needed. Donations for Oil Spill Cleanup Ms. Wise is leading an effort at Tatum to collect supplies to assist with cleanup of the oil spill in the Gulf. Items like soap and towels are needed. A complete list has been sent home with all students and is posted throughout the school. Families should place their donations in the gray bins placed around the school. They will be collecting items until May 28th School Uniforms K & 2nd grade parent Claire Hough sent an eMail to the PTO asking about school uniforms. Jane Beattie spoke to Mrs. Russell and learned there is a comprehensive process in place for schools to follow when they are interested in putting a school uniform policy in place. The process requires a committee to investigate the potential costs and present a survey to all school families. If the initial survey shows that more than 50% of families are in favor of school uniforms then a vote will be put forward to all families and staff. 75% of the consortium must vote in favor for uniforms to be mandated. Claire Hough agreed to chair a committee to pursue this further. She has reviewed the school board process and will proceed with investigation of alternatives and costs. She will present her progress at future PTO Meetings. PTO Walkie Talkies Jane described the need for the PTO to have their own walkie talkies for use at major PTO events. In the past, they have been borrowing walkie talkies from the teachers/staff or aftercare. Mrs. Kannaday suggested looking into Nextel two-ways as they may be more affordable. Jane asked the PTO to approve up to $300 for the cost of 4-6 walkie talkies. A motion was made, seconded and approved for up to $300 for PTO walkie talkies.
Next PTO Meeting TBD in August ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

We just had 3 classes adopted again. It’s never too late! Parliamentarian: Jane Beattie Introduced Stacey Friday as a liaison for the community-wide Dirty Duo event being held at the Celery Fields in May. Don Bickle, the head of the event and a Tatum parent, wants to donate proceeds from the Dirty Duo to the Tatum Ridge PE department. A motion was made to accept this generous donation for the PE Department at Tatum. The motion was seconded and passed. Teacher Liaison: No Report Principal’s Report: Tomorrow is the day to VOTE for the continuation of the 1 mil tax for Sarasota public school operations. Mrs. Russell announced that she will, in fact, be here next year through the first quarter of the school year. She invited anyone who has questions about her retirement to visit her at her post outside the front doors before or after school. Mrs. Russell also shared her disappointed that her participation in the county’s early out drop program could not be extended. She feels she is too young to retire. She eased some minds by ensuring that her position at Tatum will go to an experienced Principal, and that all programs and the orientations scheduled for April will continue as in the past. PTO Board Elections Karen announced that she and Kim have decided NOT to run as co-presidents. Karen reported that due to the fact that the positions of co-president do not have a candidate at this time the board collectively felt that postponing the meeting until next month would be prudent. Mrs. BC made the motion to postpone the PTO Executive Board Elections until next month at a special called session to vote on all board positions. This motion was seconded and passed. The date and time of this meeting will be announced at a later time. Committee Reports: Box Tops (Michelle Christianson) Michelle was absent. Although Michelle did not provide a report, Kim Brown shared the information she knew regarding box top collections. Kim reported that Michelle has collected many box tops and there are decisions to be made regarding how to spend the money earned from box tops. Kim recommended purchasing picnic tables for the back of the school. A motion was made to utilize box top monies to purchase picnic tables and umbrellas for the back of the school. The motion was seconded and passed. Book Drive (Shannon Davie) In Shannon’s absence, Kim reported that over 2200 books were collected from the school-wide book drive. The teachers were appreciative of the opportunity to choose books for their classroom libraries. The remainder of the books will then be donated to the Sarasota County Cyesis program. Book Fair (Karen Kiernan, Linda Harrison) – April 12- 15 The theme this year is “Book Fair Diner, All You Can Read”. Wednesday, April 14 the book fair will stay open until 7:00 pm that evening. Volunteers are needed daily. Business Partners (Kim Brown) Dominos Night raised just under $300 and Mrs. Wynne’s class earned the most money. Chick-fil-a night raised just under $250. Skate Night is April 22nd. It will be a “crazy hair affair”. Jog-a-thon (Susan Snyder, Kim Brown) – Thursday, March 25, 2010. Kudos to Kim and Susan for carrying out a fabulous idea… the Jog-a-thon kick-off “Slime Time” raised $960. This was a huge success. If you are interested in volunteering for the Jog-a-thon please email the PALS coordinators to volunteer. Each child will receive a free jog-a-thon t-shirt. Additional shirts can be purchased for $5. PALS (Sharon Moloney, Michelle Christianson) Sharon requested that all PALS approved volunteers please fill-out and sign the form on the back page in the volunteer handbook that states that you have received and read the handbook. Each volunteer was given this handbook and many forms are still missing. A form needs to be on file for every PALS approved volunteer. Old Business Marquee (New PTO signs) After many hours of research and review Kim feels that the property at the corner of Tatum and Palmer Roads outside of the fenced area does, in fact, belong to the school. The original approved amount to purchase a PTO sign will not cover the price of a free standing sign with the letters and vandal cover. A motion was made to purchase a sign not to exceed $2700. This motion was seconded and passed. Referendum Karen reminded us that in January we heard from Paula Ippolito from Citizens for a Better Schools. She educated us on the logistics of the March 16 Referendum and potential effects if the referendum fails. She also informed us that as a PTO we were able to take a position on the referendum and make donations to the organization to help fund the campaign. The motion was made in January to SUPPORT the referendum and donate $1000 to this cause. The motion was seconded and passed. DON’T FORGET TO VOTE “YES” TOMORROW! Playground Equipment Kim updated us on the $14000 that was approved to purchase new playground equipment. The equipment has been ordered and is expected to ship on March 23. The county has agreed to pay for weed control and mulch to expand our playground and Mrs. Russell located money to purchase the necessary edging around the playground area. School Equipment Kim reported a request from our custodian, Joe, for 5 white tables to replace old tables that are broken. These tables are used on a daily basis and cost approximately $50 a piece. The motion was made to purchase 5 white tables. The motion was seconded and approved. Technology money The money that was voted on last year to purchase Education City software was budgeted for the following year; however, it was not specifically earmarked for the renewal of said software. This is an education program that all teachers use daily. Since this money was not designated for the software, but lumped under a general heading the assembly needs to vote on the renewal of Education City. A motion was made to renew Education City for the following year. The motion was seconded and passed. New Business: Kindergarten Round-up The Kindergarten orientation is Thursday, April 8. Karen Kirsch reported Volunteers are welcome and needed. Let Debbie Tippen know if you can volunteer and don’t forget to dress like a cowpoke. Safe Routes to School (SRTS) (Thyra Schwab, Carolyn Braun, Nickie Wolfe) Tatum has been chosen for a cooperative project with the County, School Board and the Dept. of Transportation. The committee will be developing a grant proposal to secure funding for the SRTS program. This program is essentially limitless in its potential for providing safer routes to Tatum and encouraging biking and walking groups with safety at the forefront. Other Traci Werman shared a concern regarding Tatum’s current bi-laws. She shared the feeling that as the bylaws currently state a person must have held a position as a committee chair before being able to run as a contender for an executive board position. After much discussion 3 motions were made to amend the current bi-laws. These motions will be tabled for review and voted on at the next general assembly meeting. The motions are as follows: A motion to allow a person to run for the position of Program Funds Coordinator, Parliamentarian, Treasurer, or Secretary without having previously chaired a committee at Tatum. A motion to allow a person to run for the position of Program Funds Coordinator, Parliamentarian, or Secretary without having previously chaired a committee at Tatum. A motion was made that a person running for and holding an executive board position will be a Tatum Ridge Elementary School parent, guardian, or staff member. Barb Grier requested pictures of families at different Tatum events for the Tatum 5 Star Book. A special meeting will be called in April. The time and date is to be determined. The May meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 10 at 3:30 pm. Childcare will be provided at no cost for parents and guardians of Tatum students attending this meeting. Meeting was adjourned at 7:40 Respectfully Submitted, Thyra Schwab, Secretary ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ PTO Meeting Agenda January 11, 2010 @ 3:30 pm Welcome Approval of Minutes Co-Presidents: Kim Brown and Karen Kirsch - no report Vice President: Susan Snyder Thank you to everyone who helped with the book fair, holiday mart and staff appreciation luncheon. The referendum is up for renewal and will be voted on March 16, 2010. 78% of the money is for teacher salaries. 63% of Sarasota County teachers have a Master’s or higher. This tax is not new. It is a continuation. Better schools = higher property values. If it doesn’t pass. Cut teachers, cut teacher’s salaries, programs will get cut. New Business: Budget Adjustment Kim Brown introduced a new budget proposal discussed by the executive board and Mrs. Russell. Upon thorough review of the Tatum PTO finances it was discovered that we have a surplus of money. After considering the amount of money we need to maintain in our account it was decided that a certain amount should be spent for the benefit of Tatum Ridge given the idea that the families that helped raise this money would like to see the money used while their children are in school at Tatum Ridge. Nickie explained the budget and the proposal for playground and assemblies funding. A full proposal is available upon request from PTO Treasurer, Nickie Wolfe. A motion was made to approve the proposal for playground and assemblies. The motion passed. A committee will be formed for teachers and parents to decide how best to utilize the $15000.
Other Karen discussed the option for our PTO to take a position on the referendum and donate to the Citizens for Better Schools (CBS) to help support the March referendum. Kim Brown and Susan Snyder will be the liaison’s for Tatum Ridge.
Meeting adjourned at 4:18 pm. Next Meeting: Monday, March 8 at 8:30 am
